QUESTION: I like unique names for characters and am looking forward to coming up with some when I start writing. What’s the most unique character name you’ve come across?
Answer: I also really like to have an original character name. What fun would reading be if every boy lead was either named John or Chris? Or if every girl lead was named Mary or Isabella? It's fine to use those as names, but it's so much easier to create really original names. The most unique character name I've ever come across would have to be maybe that guy from Incarnate, I think it was? He was Ana's dad and his name was Menehem. I think there was this other person named Werbenger or something like that. I can't remember it at all! If you know who I'm talking about, please tell me in the comments! I know it starts with a W but I couldn't even pronounce the name, let alone spell it!
Hi & Happy Friday!
ReplyDeleteWow, those names are certainly unique.

Haha, I guess that proves how weird the names were if you can't remember how to spell them ;) I'm a new follower! Love the blog.

I think that some of the most creative names are most appropriate in scifi or fantasy novels.

I don't like names I ca't pronounce, so sometimes it's a little jarring when you're reading a story. other times, it's nice like you say to have something unique. Anyway, new follower here's mine http://kristyberridge.blogspot.com.au/
ReplyDeleteNew follower here... Your choice of names is good, I've never heard of either!
ReplyDeleteI like unique names, too. And like Kristy, I don't like names I can't pronounce, either. It's a fine line authors walk between unique and "what-the-heck-is-that."
ReplyDeleteI'm a new follower. Here's my #FF :) HAve a good weekend!

ReplyDeleteManehem is Hebrew I think. Sounds Biblical. My name is from Dickens. I've always thought Fagin was appropriately named.

I haven't read Incarnate yet so I can't help you with the mystery name. I like your comment about not wanting to read the same name over and over again.
ReplyDeleteNew follower.

Gah, I just bough Incarnate and am currently waiting for it to arrive. And I'm exactly like you where I don't want to read about characters, especially MC's, that have bland names that are so completely generic. Well, I will read books with generic names but it's so much more fun to have the wild ones. Not to mention they are so much more interesting and memorable.

Those are definitely funny names no question about that. Click on my name to check my pick, happy FF.
ReplyDeleteThe one thing that I find difficult names would be pronunciation! Great post and new follower!

I agree. If all characters had the same name, it would be too hard to tell them apart. New follower, by the way.
ReplyDeleteSoooo reason #934? 840? 1004? to read Incarnate: COOL NAMES. Those both sound awesome!
